4 Day Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert Tour

This four-day desert tour travels from Ouarzazate to Merzouga through some of southern Morocco’s most striking settings: the kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, Ouarzazate and the Road of a Thousand Kasbahs, the Dades Gorge, Todgha Gorge, and the golden Erg Chebbi dunes of Merzouga. You visit the ancient Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, walk beneath the towering cliffs of the Todra Gorges, ride camels into the dunes, spend a night under the Sahara stars with local Berber hosts, explore the Merzouga desert by 4×4, and visit a nomadic family — before crossing back to Marrakech.

Every itinerary is fully customisable to suit your preferences and pace.

4 Day Ouarzazate to Merzouga Desert Tour

    Itinerary

DAY 1: OUARZAZATE -> AIT BEN HADDOU -> DADES GORGES

We start your tour with a pick-up in Ouarzazate, then drive to the famous Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a location for numerous movies such as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, and the famous Game of Thrones, and many more. After lunch in Ait Ben Haddou village, continue to the Dades Gorges via Ouarzazate through the “Road of the Thousand Kasbahs.” Arrive in the evening and spend the night in a Hotel/Riad in the Dades Gorges.

DAY 2: DADES GORGES -> TODRA GORGES -> MERZOUGA DESERT

We’ll start the second day with a delicious breakfast, then leave for the Todra Gorges, where we’ll have a walk under the 300-meter-high cliffs. Then continue our trip to Merzouga, where we’ll find an experienced camel man and camels waiting to carry us across the fabulous dunes of Merzouga, for around half an hour to reach the camp. Spend the night with locals under the stars.

DAY 3: FULL DAY TO EXPLORE MERZOUGA DESERT

After breakfast in the camp and a camel trek back to Merzouga, we’ll start our explorative day of the Merzouga desert, driving through the desert in a 4×4 vehicle. We’ll also have an opportunity to visit a nomadic family close to the borders between Morocco and Algeria before we head to the village of dark-skinned people, originally slaves from Sudan, to listen to Gnaoua music and experience their lifestyle. Overnight in the hotel.

DAY 4: MERZOUGA DESERT -> OUARZAZATE -> MARRAKECH

We’ll start the last day with a delicious breakfast in a hotel, then start our journey to Marrakech. We’ll have some stops along the way before getting to Marrakech in the evening around 7pm.

How long is the camel ride? What is the alternative to camels?

The camel ride usually takes about half an hour to reach the desert camp, depending on the camp location and conditions. What is the best time to visit Morocco?

The best times to visit Morocco are generally spring, from March to May, and autumn, from September to November, when temperatures are usually pleasant across much of the country. Winter can also be an excellent time to travel, especially for exploring the southern desert regions.
