5 Day Marrakech to Chefchaouen Desert Tour

This five-day tour links Marrakech with Chefchaouen by way of the Sahara, weaving together some of Morocco’s most memorable settings: the High Atlas Mountains, the kasbah of Aït Benhaddou, the Dades Gorge, Todgha Gorge, the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi at Merzouga, the imperial city of Fes, and finally the blue-washed streets of Chefchaouen.

You watch a desert sunset and sunrise, ride camels into the dunes, try sandboarding, and enjoy Berber music beside a campfire under a sky full of stars. Along the way you dive into Fes’ layered history, its bustling medina and intricate architecture, before discovering Chefchaouen’s blue lanes, lively souks, and local craftsmanship.

Every itinerary is fully customisable to match your travel preferences and pace.

5 Day Marrakech to Chefchaouen Desert Tour

    Itinerary

DAY 1: MARRAKECH -> HIGH ATLAS MOUNTAINS -> AIT BEN HADDOU -> OUARZAZATE -> DADES VALLEY

Your tour begins with a welcome at Marrakech airport or your hotel/riad in the city, where your friendly local guide meets you to lead the whole journey. Leaving Marrakech, the road climbs into the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains, with awe-inspiring views over the landscape along the route.

We stop in the town of Ait Ben Haddou, where you can tour the Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site featured in films such as “The Mummy” and “Prince of Persia.” Take your time to admire the architecture and the intricate decorations of this historic marvel.

After a lunch break, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa” and known as the “Gateway to the Desert.” Here you can choose to explore Atlas Studios, the largest film studio in Morocco, for a glimpse into the world of movie-making and its famous sets.

We then head to the Dades Valley, where you’ll see the extraordinary rock formations known as monkey fingers. Enjoy the scenic drive along the Dades Valley, with panoramic views over the gorges, before reaching your overnight accommodation and unwinding at a charming hotel for a restful night.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 353 km / 6 hours 30 minutes

DAY 2: DADES VALLEY -> TODRA CANYON -> MERZOUGA DESERT

Start your day with breakfast before a picturesque drive along the Todra River, surrounded by lush palm groves and charming Berber villages. Our destination is the awe-inspiring Todra Gorge in Tinghir, known as one of the world’s most spectacular canyons. From there, we continue towards the Merzouga desert.

On the way to the Erg Chebbi dunes in Merzouga, your driver/guide may suggest a stop at a traditional Berber shop, where you can try on a Berber outfit for a complimentary photo session — completely free. You’re welcome to browse and buy souvenirs such as scarves, ideal for the desert, though there’s no obligation to purchase; the shop’s main aim is to showcase Berber culture. If you’re not interested, just let your driver/guide know and we’ll skip the stop.

At Merzouga, prepare for an unforgettable adventure: a camel ride into the desert to watch the breathtaking sunset over the dunes, plus the thrill of sandboarding. Then retreat to a luxury desert camp for the night, where you’ll enjoy a delicious dinner and take in the magic of the Sahara’s starry night sky.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 310 km / 5 hours

DAY 3: MERZOUGA DESERT -> ZIZ VALLEY -> MIDDLE ATLAS MOUNTAINS -> IFRANE -> FES

We recommend an early start to catch the breathtaking sunrise over Erg Chebbi’s dunes. After a tasty breakfast, you can choose between a camel ride or a 4×4 vehicle to return towards Merzouga, where your experienced guide/driver is ready to lead the next part of the journey to Fes.

Along the way we make several stops at remarkable spots, including the scenic Ziz Valley, a captivating cedar forest near Azrou where you might spot Barbary monkeys, and the picturesque town of Ifrane, often called the Switzerland of Morocco.

By late afternoon we reach Fes. Check into your chosen hotel or riad in the historic Medina of Fes for a comfortable overnight stay.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 500 km / 7 hours 30 minutes

DAY 4: EXPLORE FES -> CHEFCHAOUEN

Start your day with breakfast at your riad as you prepare to explore Fes, followed by a drive to Chefchaouen.

Your knowledgeable local guide of Fes and your driver meet you at your riad to begin a tour of the Medina. Discover its historic streets, delve into its rich history, and marvel at the stunning architecture. You’ll also have the chance to enjoy lunch in the vibrant Medina, indulging in the authentic flavors and aromas of local cuisine.

In the afternoon, we journey to Chefchaouen, known as the blue pearl of Morocco. After a rewarding day, relax at a charming riad in the heart of Chefchaouen — a peaceful retreat where you can soak in the enchanting atmosphere and enjoy a comfortable night’s rest.

    Approximate driving distance/time: 197 km / 3 hours 38 minutes

    DAY 5: EXPLORE CHEFCHAOUEN -> TANGIER / FES / CASABLANCA / MARRAKECH

Start your day with a hearty breakfast at your riad. In the morning you’ll have time to explore the charming town of Chefchaouen. Known for its unique blue-washed buildings, it offers a picturesque setting where you can stroll through the narrow streets, browse the lively markets, or relax at one of the cozy cafes and restaurants serving authentic Moroccan dishes.

In the afternoon, we head to Tangier, dropping you off at the airport, Tangier port, or your hotel, marking the conclusion of your tour.

Please note you also have the option to end the tour in Fes, Casablanca, or back in Marrakech.
